Size-by-Size Breakdown

SS6
~2.0mm

SS6 — Fine Detail & Pen Work

Pen BarrelsClip AccentsInlay Detail

SS6 shines in intricate designs where precision matters. It hugs tight pen barrel curves well and is ideal for filling negative space around larger stones. On tumblers, it works best as a detail filler rather than a primary stone.

Keep in mind: More stones needed for coverage means more time. Plan accordingly.

SS8
~2.4mm

SS8 — Refined & Versatile

Pen BodiesDetail FillsBeginner-Friendly

A step up from SS6, SS8 offers a balance between detail and coverage. It's a popular choice for full-pen designs and works well on tumblers as a secondary stone mixed with SS10 or SS12 to add texture and dimension.

SS10
~2.8mm

SS10 — The All-Rounder ⭐

Great for BeginnersStandard TumblersPen Friendly

SS10 works on nearly everything. It sits comfortably on the curves of 16–30 oz tumblers and is manageable enough for pen work. If you're starting out, SS10 is a reliable choice that delivers classic sparkle without being overwhelming to place.

SS12
~3.2mm

SS12 — Large Tumbler Favorite

20–40 oz TumblersBeginner-FriendlyFull Coverage

SS12 is a smaller rhinestone size that is less common for full tumbler coverage, especially on larger 20 oz, 30 oz, and 40 oz tumblers. Because the stones are smaller, they require more rhinestones per square inch and more individual placements to complete a project.

The payoff is detail. SS12 creates a refined, more intricate look and works especially well for tight curves, tapered areas, lettering, borders, patterns, and detailed design features. It can be a beautiful choice for all-over coverage when you want a finer, more densely detailed finish, but it is also excellent for mixing with larger stone sizes to add dimension and precision.

SS16
~4.0mm

SS16 — Statement & Drama

Large TumblersAccent Clusters

SS16 stones are eye-catching on their own. They work exceptioally well on gradual curves and larger tumbler surfaces where their size doesn't fight the curve geometry. Many cartists use SS16 as a focal accent stone mixed with SS10 or SS12 for contrast. Not ideal for pen work due to barrel size constraints.

SS20
~4.8mm

SS20 — Maximum Impact

Bold AccentsFlat Surfaces

SS20 makes a statement. These large stones work beautifully as intentional design elements such as a cluster focal, bordered edge, or mixed-size centerpiece. They can also be used for all-over coverage on larger, flatter surfaces or items with wider curves. They do not work well on narrow surfaces like pen barrels.

Common Project Scenarios

🥤 Large Tumbler (30-40 oz) - Full Coverage

SS20 as a primary stone gives efficient coverage and bold sparkle. Mix in SS6 or SS8 as gap fillers. .

🥤 Standard Tumbler (16-20 oz)

SS20 or SS16 both work well. SS16 gives more detail; SS20 covers faster. Great for beginners looking to complete a full project.

✏️ Pen - Full Barrel

SS6 or SS8 for tight barrel coverage. SS10 can work on thicker pen barrels. Avoid SS16 and SS20 they won't conform to the curve.

✏️ Pen - Accent / Clip Only

SS6 gives precise placement on small accent areas. SS8 adds a touch more sparkle if you have slightly more surface space.

🌟 Mixed-Size (Scatter Fill)  Designs

Combining sizes adds dimension and visual interest. A common pairing: SS12 as the base with SS6 or SS8 filling gaps, and SS16 or SS20 as focal points. Let your design guide the mix. There's no single right answer.
